Yeah, well mate, what are you good in??
oDesk is a great place and I usually outsource a lot of work over there, but man it's highly competitive.
The best niches are 3d animation, graphic design, illustration, coding, web-development and consulting. Don't even try going into content writing, content input or anything like that. Sorry, but you will be crushed.

I think Most Odesk freelancers just go for the encoding or data entry jobs.
Although the web design or graphic artist are also a hit for clients and job seekers.

 

Yeah, as I said before, there is a LOT of experienced writers at oDesk, loads of competition.
Why would anybody choose a newbie when they can go for a very cheap, experienced writer. You can't really gain any leverage with writing jobs. Design and web-development are a bit easier.

 

Yeah I heard Odesk are highly competitive. Basically tiny chance for newbies.

odesk requires some experience IMO

 

Odesk has some of the lousiest content writers, dare I say, in the world. I mean yeah, when I buy content at $0.004 per word I know what I'm paying for. I know I have to spend 5-10 mins to rewrite the stuff my Indian friends send me but, still, the stuff I buy makes sense. I can't say the same about odesk. I got some articles at $1 per 500 words (!!) and couldn't do jack with them.

All in all, if you can write your way out of a paper box, pimp your stuff to odesk.

Other than that, if you're willing to learn stuff, shoot me a PM. I might find you a spot in my team.

Whatever you are good in would be a good job at odesk. With that being said, if you are a new provider over there, you need to be able to show how good you are so you should put up your resume showing your training and experience, and your portfolio showing your past projects, and take the skills tests relevant to your expertise.
If you do not have training and experience at anything and are going there to learn your way around first, it would not work.

 

Get to oDesk. See what other contractor have by looking at their profiles. Go learn and then come back and start bidding for contract/jobs. As anew comer be patient. You can be applying for as long as a whole year without landing on a job. Otherwise there are lot of opportunities there. Just start by Data Entry jobs to get you learning more.

It's free. Lots of outsourced jobs available at Odesk. I suggest you log on, register and sart browsing for the type of work you can do. You will surely find something you can do and make money while you're at it.
