what makes a vps slow or fast?

Which parameter or specification of a VPS ensures that web loading speed will be high or low?
Is it the RAM or the bandwidth?
Secondly, is it true that a vps is also shared? If yes, then can we make sure while purchasing a vps that our users will experience speed up web loading e.g. by purchasing bigger RAM or bandwidth?

It depends a lot on the hardware the data base has. Speed of processors etc. VPS will share resources but have their own OS (operating system) This allows better security. It is a complex answer and takes more space to fully answer that I am going to post here. Do a Google search for VPS. For example of hardware and data base difference, Xbox live actually has faster connections in Canada. Our data bases have newer equipment.

Generally neither. The disk i/o is normally the limiting factor on a VPS/VPS node...any shared server, for that matter. Slow/saturated hard drives result in slow load times. Most users will never come anywhere close to saturating the bandwidth port, and as long as your VPS has enough RAM to suit your needs, you'll be fine there as well.

Also, the distance from the server to your users is going to affect the load time as well. The further away you are physically from the server, the slower the load time will be. This is where a Content Delivery Network (CDN) can come in handy.

Disk i/o yes, and it's important you choose a VPS provider using at least RAID10. Many of the lower end VPS providers using 1 or 2 SATA disks will run into disk throughput issues at around 10+ average VMs. RAID10 ads resilience and a performance boost to match.

Location is less important for Europe / North America. We operate datacenters in both locations and for the average user, it's hard to notice any difference in page load time from any of these locations. This does, of course, assume no network saturation and a well configured network. A CDN is useful when you have a lot of high bandwidth / streaming type content but it doesn't make a VPS fast or slow.

Also consider the underlying hardware for a VPS. You want good dual Xeons/Opterons, a minimum of 32GB RAM, enterprise hardware (i.e. not a desktop pretending to be a server).

Yes, each VPS account gets its shared environment on the server, but the VPS resources are completely divided and dedicated to the account.
While choosing VPS plan for resource intensive website, you might need to consider to have multiple CPU cores, at least 4096 MB RAM and Burst RAM available, with RAID-10 drive.

It is combination of RAM,CPU and HDD speed.

Its depend on your Base dedicated Server configure and your guaranteed RAM,VPS and H.D.D technology.
if your website loading slowly more often your RAM is low.check your log to find what is the problem

WSWD is completely correct in that disk I/O will always be the ultimate limiting factor, and on a highly saturated VPS it is likely to be the first physical system that comes under strain.

However, assuming the disk I/O isn't saturated at a given point in time, then sites on a VPS can load slowly if your VPS doesn't have sufficient RAM or CPU available - this has nothing to do with the physical server running our of resources.

We're finding that this is starting to become a common problem for a few of our customers. They started off with relatively small VPSs, but as they've added more web sites over time (most of them DB driven with open-source software - Wordpress, Umbraco etc) and some have even added DB servers, then the resources they initially asked for are being completely saturated. Many don't seem to understand that as you make more demands on the resources you have, you will probably need to upgrade them at some point by adding more CPU cores or more ram at additional cost.

    Hello

Some stuff you need for best performanse and that is : RAM,CPU and HDD speed.

Everything else depends on the company and their support

Physical farness from the server, increase the server load time.so that now CDN comes in concept to make response time of server effective for users.
