I've been messing around with linux for sometime, don't let windows know! With linux I still only have what I would call "basic skills". This is because windows makes things very easy. I don't have to su, cd, makefile etc, to compile/install a vid driver on windows. I tend to run windows more often because windows makes it that much easier/faster. When it comes down to it though, all the virus, security issues, the system halting for no reason, and all the other windows "cons", Linux doesn't seem that time consuming.

You would think linux being open source would be attacked more then windows, well Linux isn't huge like windows, and IMHO, windows wasn't made to be secure but "Easy". Linux was created free of charge, and it's open source, this tells me a few things.

1:Better code / free programs
- The people that code/coded for linux did it for free. free code = Fast efficent code. Well in most cases. The linux programmer really don't have a deadline, MS just kinda throws unfinished Junk out the "window", and it ends up in your "recycle bin". Don't get me wrong other companys do the same, and I do like windows. Linux has alternatives to some programs for windows that cost hundreds of dollars, and with linux the cost is 0$. Would you rather pay some crazy price for (sometimes half-A**) software, or take the time to install it for free on linux?

2:Linux will continue to grow, and get "easy".

3:linux will be at a higher risk when 50%+ are running it, if it happens. We will have to go from there won't we?

*Linux being open source does scare me, god only knows what some "leet" linux user has done with the code!*


When/If linux gets huge like windows, has more virus, more known security issues, etc, Then we can shame linux like most linux user's do windows users, and move to some other OS! (I'm J/K, BTW)

Linux, like windows has it's pros/cons! Use linux for the software, a warm fuzzy feeling, etc... I say dual boot, get the best from both worlds!

There are many linux distros, if you are interested in linux or you don't know what it is, take a look http://www.linux.org/ . You decide what works for you just know linux is a good cheap option IMO.

What are your actual opinions on Fedora, I was thinking of switching from Mandrake to Fedora but I heard F was based on RedHat which I have a large hate for...

I'm using fedora as a learning tool. I'm on dialup also, so I don't want to DL a distro at 5kbps. Please note I'm talking about fedora core 1.

From what I hear I would never switch from mandrake to Fedora core.

Fedora core is based on RH and If you don't like RH do not use fedora!

I have Fedora core 2 also, i can't run it because it doesn't seem to like my intel 810e g chip. If you have mandrake installed configured etc, I wouldn't switch. Now if your very good with linux you may want to switch to debian/slackware. I assume your a beginner RH/Mandrake be sure to read up if you are going to switch!
I don't have much time but I will post some more info later.

Im a sort of advanced beginner, I can do everything on Linux I need to anyway including configuring C apps etc.

I guess im not really a begginer but I still dont want to have to start playing with kernals or anything else...

Guess that old 500mhz machine will come in handy as a test machine...

Mac OSX 10.4

Been Mac since 1978 ... yes from the very beginning.. well AppleII then Mac .. almost went with a Lisa .. had a few Macs and then iMac Bondi Blue and some ibook laptops and now a combination of G3 [ibooks] G4 and G5 iMacs

Would I change to a system riddled with viruses ?
Would I change to a system that took 13 years to even try to emulate Mac?
Would I change to a system that is difficult to install, run?
Would I change to a system that does not have apache built in?
Would I change .....it goes on ......

 

I actually like MAC's but I couldnt use one everyday, even the new 10.4 doesnt tickle my fancy too much although on a 25" widescreen at 1920x1600 it does look insanely sexy.

 

Alright, not to start a flame war but the reason I moved to Windows was because I came in contact with Macs for 5 years in university. When I was headed there from high school I was very excited to finally be able to use the legendary macs, but my experience was quite unpleasant (this was in OS 7 days). Slow, poor multitasking, very crash-prone and with an awkward one-button mouse. I fled to the haven of Intel boxes which could run both Windows and Linux, and also had a much wider range of software. Being an engineer and a geek, the apparent "it just works" appeal of macs rang hollow when I saw how lame they were beyond the superficial level. The programmers tools on Windows also beat the IDEs I used on the Mac hands down (as well as the Sun boxes we used).

Since then, I've stuck with Windows with the occasional dual-boot install of Linux. I once got utterly sick of WIndows 2000 crashing and decided to move my development over to Linux's vaunted stability. It turned out I had faulty RAM in the computer which was causing the problems!

Lately VMWare is my friend Windows 2000, XP, Ubuntu, 98 all running in a safe and rollbackable little environment

Incidentaly, I've not really had much problems with viruses. Hardware firewall + Opera + Eudora means I don't worry about that problem much

 

And for those that think Linux is difficult to use, I'd wager it is mainly because you learned another system first. I'm totally lost if I have to use a windows or classic mac machine, everything just seems to be engineered specificly to hold me back and keep me from doing what I want.

On a personal level and at work, OSX. I do have a (ick) windoze laptop though with XT or XP, whatever it is called... I love my PC laptop to death, it just would be so much nicer with a different OS, but we have some programs that still run on the old windoze os...

mine's also Windows Xp sp2. I think most of them here use windows
