What would you do if you were 16 again?

My kids are with other kids throughout the week at least 1 day a week if not 3 to 4 days in groups. They tend to fit less with other kids than the norm and can share (which seems to be an ignored topic in todays me first-me only attitude.)

I think it has been an ongoing misunderstood subject that homeschool kids don't get enough socialization. Now, of course, there are exceptions, because it seems like the media only tells the homeschool part of the story when it is bad, such as Andrea Yates, david Koresh, etc...

 

You are soooo right, and it doesn't matter if it is public, private or home schooling, the parents have to play the key educator.

I hate hearing complaints about someone kid at school by the parent blaming it on the teachers. It isn't the teacher's job to raise the kids, just teach them certain subjects.

 

private/homeschool was horrible, not only can't I spell worth a hoot, once they finally sent me to a normal school, I got my ass kicked on a daily basis for being wierd.

 

I'd behave like a typical teenager.

 

Since you are on the DP forum, I am assuming that your schooling had nothing to do with your wierdness......

No I own a short bus but not as nice as the one in my avatar.

If I was 16 again, I'd probably treat other people better.

I had a bad temper and it got me into trouble a few times (not too bad).

I met my wife when I was 16 so I wouldn't really change a whole lot.

 

That is cool. Not many poeple can say that.

 

If I were 16 again, I'd try to be less shy. They'd probably give me medications or something these days and call it social anxiety disorder. Having to do a presentation in class generally brought me to tears at that age. If I talked to someone regularly, I was fine, but it was hard for me to even talk to acquantances. Now I'm fine, really! Just look how normal I am on discussion boards!

Wouldn't change much else. Went to a nice, geeky high school that specialized in math, science and computers. It was a lot of fun and it's really too bad the internet wasn't available to us. The computers were either attached to a mainframe or (my senior year) black and white Apples (IIc, I think).

 

Wouldn't have bothered going to Uni. Would dive in to coding/business development/personal development books right away and get on with it. Would also have gone wakeboarding more often and complete discard conventional wisdom about pretty much every subject.

That's it in a nutshell.

 

When I was 14 my mum caught me smoking. She said she refused to pay for my dirty habit, so I got an after-school job in a chip shop and bought my own fags.

When I was 15 I wanted to go on holiday without my parents to France. My mum said ask your Dad. I waited till he came home drunk on Friday night (he only ever went out on a Friday) and asked him. He said sure baby, you´ll be sixteen by then. My Mum nearly killed him

Then she said, well you have to pay for it yourself. So I got a job in the school breaks in Loveable bra factory. She didn´t think I could do it and promised to double what I earned. I went on holiday to South of France with my best friend and had a blast.

At 17, my dad died and at 18 I left home and went to HK. All I know now is that if I was 16, there is not much I´d change but I hope to high heaven that my daughter does not turn out anythng like me.

She´s only nearly four and is a little minx already. I am going to get paid back 500% for what I put my long-suffering mother through.
