What would you like to know about PTSD or how to get better?

I’m starting a blog about PTSD, treatments for PTSD, self-help techniques, etc. What would you like to know about PTSD or how to get better?

If you or someone you know has PTSD, what are some questions you have? What are some things you would like to know about?

I will use these ideas to create the foundation of my content.

(Just some background on me, I have studied psychology and PTSD since 2006, I have a Master s in counseling psychology, and I have trained for 2 years as a therapist. I now work as a freelance writer.)

You studied / got trained in those incredible fields and now you're a freelance writer? Why? Signs of the times, I guess.

The question I've always wanted to ask: Why is it called a disorder? A very normal, very stable 20-something year old gets shipped to Iraq, experiences real danger, sees death and destruction, comes home and he is now an invalid with PTSD. However, the Iraqi civilians who witness the same danger, death and destruction are able to brush it off and go about their daily lives without seeking any treatment, and will probably be offended if you try to convince them that they perhaps need counseling and/or treatment. Are we doing more harm by labeling something as a disorder, when in reality it is not but becomes such because the person is led to believe that he or she has a disorder?

I became a freelance writer because I love writing, love being my own boss, and am currently living in a town where there are not many options for pursuing a careers as a counselor/therapist.

Changes in mental and behavioral patterns are normally referred to as disorders in the DSM and ICD if they cause impairment in social, occupational, and other important areas of functioning.

My guess would be that there is a stark contrast between "normal" and "stressful". Stay in stressful and you'll probably be ok. Return to "normal" and if adjustment doesn't come then you have a problem.

Now, your armed forces guy is an obvious candidate but we see PTSD being applied to rape victims and childhood abuse victims. What is the criteria for PTSD versus "something shitty happened"?

Ok, so it sounds like what you want to know is: What exactly is PTSD and who qualifies for the diagnosis?
