    I am wondering why so many on DP have directories? Whats the big deal and can they actually bring in a large income?

    i think it has a lot to do with running a SEO company yourself. but thats just my thought.

    Not large income but if your have high pr (above pr6) you can earn good money.

    Directories can earn a good sum if it has a high PR.I dont think traffic is the main purpose of webmasters submitting to directories.It's the SEO

    Its not too hard to see why once you understand the supply and demand are feeding each other and encourage the proliferation of directory sites.

    Directory provides backlink, and backlink improves site ranking/popularity. The more backlink you have, the better your site is rated in SE. So, you (the demand) will submit to as many directory sites (the supply) in a bid to improve your site popularity among SE. Since the demand is infinite, naturally people will create as many supply as possible, hence almost everyone here will have one in their portfolio.

    I'd personally sooner have 1 good non-reciprocal backlink from a related authority site than 50 from ten-a-penny directories, whatever their PR is.

    Directory sites, depending upon the topic and nature, can be worthwhile. Some people, are collectors of websites related to subjects and topics of interest to them (I'm guilty ;))

    But the thing is, you can have both. Submitting to a directory [usually - and should] cost you nothing. The 50 backlinks from directories may only help you a bit - but it still helps, so why not?
