When did you start earning through websites?

I'm just curious, when did you start earning your first $ through websites? I have been designing websites for years now, but I only started serving ads on my sites recently, so I'm wondering how far I'm behind already :p

I just started recently as well. It's starting off very slow but increasing every week. The sites are new as well. I've only began seriously designing and promoting websites just a few months ago. Wish I started years ago too!

Depends on your motives at any given time.

If you started building sites for the fun of it then later on decided you want to make money then you're right on time :)

If you started building sites with the sole purpose of making money and you just put ads up, yeah, you're way behind.

BUT..... that doesn't mean you should have had ads up from day one. A lot of webmasters who start building sites focused solely on making cash before even learning how to build sites. The effect is after actually realizing how much work it takes to learn to build sites from scratch they often become frustrated and quit after a few months. The most successful webmasters I've ever met all started making sites for fun. The cash came later.

So what I'm saying is it's probably a good thing you didn't start with ads and greed as your motivation. You'd probably have gotten frustrated by now after working for years and only having earned maybe $100 or so. IMO and the advice I give to everyone trying to get in on this business is to learn in stages. Learn site building first. Define your strengths. Then learn promotion. Then learn the business aspect of it including earning revenue.

Glad to know I'm right on track then! :) I started making websites because I enjoy doing them and I want to practice my skills, and recently I decided to place some ads since I'm paying for domain renewals and hosting anyway, and it might be nice to earn some $ at the same time. ;)

I bought my first domain three years ago. I have had simple, free-hosted websites on it ever since. But only in September of this year did I start adding advertising. In two months I have earned back everything I spent on maintaining my domain over those three years. I'll never get rich, but it's nice to have a hobby that at least pays for itself...!

It took me about a year to start earning serious money. At the start i was foolish and did not know the market and regged stupid domans etc but over a peroid time I learnt off others and once I got the hang of SE's and traffic I was flying :)

About a month and a half ago is when i officially started my revenue generating sites, but been working in the websphere for several years..

All i needed to get myself on the right tracks was digital point, ###point and talking to people on these boards..

ps. last week on my adsense account (a 1.5 months old) i noticed a red warning at the top stating "Your payments are currently on hold..." when i clicked into it i saw that my account was updated with a payment history of $###.## awaiting payment upon confirmation of my PIN.

So technically i havent made anymoney yet, till my pin arrives, but fingers cross it comes soon. And i dont care that the check is pretty small compared to others on this board, but its my first google cheque :) :) :)

    Good luck on your adventures

    good luck dude

Started earning money online 4/5 years ago, I started using adsense when it came out, heard rumours on forums that it could cover your hosting fees! Boy, it's come a long way in a short time.

I'm pretty new to it too. It never occurred to me until my site had to move off of shared hosting, and I realized how expensive hosting can get!

I started my website almost 5 years ago but only on the last February I registered my own domain and hosted my website in a paid hosting. Since then, I included the adsense ads and this month I'll receive for the first time the payment...more than $200...$90 already made this month. :D

Currently I'm developing new websites...all of them with adsense ads included to improve total revenue. :)
