When Is Less, More? (smaller AdSense format = better CTR?)

    Lately, I've noticed some discussion of an apparent developing aversion to large AdSense ads. Such as the well-respected, Google-touted-#1, heavily used (me too), top-of-the-page, 336x280 ad size.
    Words mentioned - "first thing in-your-face", "unprofessional look", "MFA", "spaminess", "turn-off", etc. Could the standard be changing?

    My question:
    Have you ever experienced better CTR, after you replaced a "biggie" with a smaller-sized ad format? If so, what was the large size you were using, and what was the smaller size you switched over to (assuming same placement and colors, etc.).

    Thank you for any responses. I think I want to try this.

    I noticed a 50% decrease in CTR when I replaced one of my larger ads with a smaller one.

    50% is huge. One big vote against the smaller ads.

    I was thinking of going from a 336 to either a medium rectangle or square.

    in one of my sites i started with only 1 leaderboard 728x90 below the top logo and menu.

    CTR was 1-1.5%

    then i added 1 skyscraper and 2 link units, CTR remained more or less the same but the pay out decreased 20-30% !
