Adsense is far from the only game in town:)

I see quite a few ads from various companies and pitches for product sales all over their site. I'm sure they generate multiple streams of income from their site network. With the domains/traffic they have it wouldn't be that difficult.

Paid exposure and also ads. Maybe even syndication sales. I'm not sure about the last one though.

Among some of the other items mentioned here, CNET also provides their marketing content (product descriptions) to other wholesalers that sell that technology. One example is The Business Network, which supplies many technology company websites with their back end store. The web-store can choose to use CNET product descriptions to be included with their product catalogue, rather than writing all their own.

As far as I know, the ads are adsense. Instead of "Ads by Goooooogle" they have the "Sponsored Links". You can have that if you get an insane amount of clicks per day.

Well, I don't know if it's a business or product you have to actually review. Most review sites don't charge companies anything to review the products, because that will skew the credibility of the review in the users eyes (you are paid, so you are gonna give them a good review).

What you can do is review the product/business and then give the company the option to advertise on that specific page. Or you can for example say that you will review it, provided that they take out an advertising deal for your site for a month (or more).

Keep in mind if you are doing reviews a la Cnet that advertisers don't like bad reviews, and so it can difficult to keep advertisers if their products aren't good and then you are going to be honest and give them bad reviews. That's why so many reviews say such nice things about products.
