    you could use a border for your adsense units; they are too close to text and could be mistaken for what they are not.

    In my experience the link ads near the top just below or above your main menu (where u have register, home links) perform very well.

    I mean the more work you put into optimizing your content the higher CTR you'll have and therefore a higher cpc.

    If you searched my blog you would have knew that :)
