I've been playing around with different sizes and so far came to conclusion that one very well placed 250x250 sized ad gives the most profit ( example on my content pages below).

    What are your experiences?

As usual, it depends. My websites .v1 utilised leaderboard that has Verdana font size 8px which blends in with my content. I only used one ad block per page, so my CTR was a healthy 7%.

Now, with .v2 design, I use 3 ad blocks ie: 2 skyscrapers and 1 rectangle. My CTR got diluted but I started to see some increase in income.

Right, when I had more ads, I had huge CTR but with one ad now, CTR is lower but $ per click is much higher.

Also ever since I switched to skyscrapers and rectangles, I also had to change my content's font accordingly. But I kinda like the blend-in results.

So far, the wide leaderboard's having the best results for me. It probably depends on the layout of your site, though.

    Correct!
When I switched my table design, I had to pick up different ads too.

Good luck! My best advice is to match the font of the Leaderboard, ie: Verdana size 8pt.

I know you're asking about ad units, but the link units have been very good to me :).

i've found oddly, the smaller the better. why? it makes your site look less trashy, it seems less like an ad. and it's a bit odd when you get 4 options to choose from selling the same thing. imagine 4 salesmen trying to sell you something at the same time, your first reaction is to RUN!!

I still keep my old Leaderboard design in my archive. Should my current Skyscrapers fail to improve my earnings, I'd revert to the old one.

    From Google's Optimization tips:

I tend to trust Google when it comes to this type advice. They have a lot more data to use than any individual publisher. It also corresponds to what I have found on my own sites.
