    My experience so far with Joomla is it is simply not simple. I want to set up a CMS, apply a template, assign some RSS feeds to certain page areas, have older RSS entries become archived so homepage page areas are fresh daily and add some articles. That's it.

    I don't want to divulge exactly what content I intent to place on my site so I will make up an example. Say my site is about Art. There may be several categories of art which each should have it's own section on the homepage:

    Painting
    Dance
    Sculpture
    Visual Arts

    Each of these should be it's own RSS feed. Additionally today's feed should become part of a history tomorrow so the home page will always be today's feed while clicking a link to Painting would give the Painting feeds for yesterday, day before and so on ...

    Can someone tell me how best to set something like this up? I am so lost trying to figure out Joomla and though it seems powerful I am almost to the point of deciding to code the site rather than rely on a CMS - the power of CMS (or promise anyway) is that setting up sites of this nature is supposed to be easy - but so far I am finding it anything but easy.


    ModX? Never heard of it ....

    Doesn't wordpress require you to buy something if you want to host it on your own domain?

    How good is the template system? Now is the sef out of the box show the keywords just like on your site that runs CMSMS or is that some sort of special mod?
    I'm a Drupal / Joomla fan but sometimes find these to be overkill and do not like the sef options that are available.

    I have researched the different CMS sites and have to say Joomla gets my vote at the moment. If I was a better programmer I'd probably choose Drupal because the search engines love Drupal sites.

    I use Wordpress for my blogs and have been extremely happy with the results. However, I can not get Wordpress to give me the CMS functions I desire without some serious headbanging.

    I'm checking out http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/ and http://modxcms.com/ as they both look interesting. Anyone else have experience with these two versus Joomla?

    The best CMS is that serving to your purposes so what works for me might not work for you.

    I suggest pay a visit to www.opensourcecms.com for a large number of CMS solutions withe demos available for every and each of them.

    I've found drupal to be very good from an SEO perspective. I also like the community support and the number of modules available. You can get listed in google and yahoo quite quickly; use the google sitemap module; and use the ping module to notify sites that your site has changed. You can also use the aggregator module to pull down interesting news items to keep your site fresh. All in all I think it's a great platform - the learning curve is a bit steep, but it's well worth it. My only complaint is that I wish there were more nice, pre-built templates available.

    I am working on a residential real estate site specifically. I'd like to have an MLS city-wide listing search but want to make sure that I don't sacrifice SEO in the process.

    My experience with e107 was less than impressive.

    Wordpress is great if you have a pretty flat structure and can hack at the page files and css to keep it from looking like a blog.

    I think Joomla is way to big a system to learn for one site.

    cmsms is pretty simple but I don't know about the community or security.
