Man, it's hard to recommend you a software for the beginning. I started with photoshop and now I use photoshop for web designs, I never tried a different software ( maybe flash and flex but those were more like programing environments for me ).

Try to take a look on the net at what photoshop can do, and then consider if it's worth the money. You need to be creative to do something cool in photoshop so keep that in mind ;)

All Adobe (photoshop, illustrator, flash, dreamweaver, etc) software has free 30 day trials.
    http://www.adobe.com/downloads/?ogn=EN_US-gntray_dl_trialdownloads

Download them. Check some tutorial sites. See what one works best for you.
I would recommend starting with photoshop as there is an infinite number of tutorials online for the beginner.

Haha i remember using gimp, damn i hated that program. It was so difficult to use and the user-interface is so crap. Well i cant expect much since its commercial product.

I recommend you take the 30 day trial for photoshop, and look up for some tutorials on the net and get ready before you start your 30 day trial. Along with that i am sure you would be able to decide whats best for you from there.

    Best Regards

You can also try out Corel's design suite which is a good, cheaper alternative to Adobe's CS.

    Invest in best of breed.
The learning curve is high so you may as well do it right from the beginning.

    Photoshop
    Flash
    Dreamweaver

GIMP is the best free option

However, it is NOTHING compared to Photoshop. Try out some 30 day trials of Photoshop and Illustrator, and decide if its worth investing in them.

I don´t know if you realy need Dreamweaver - if you want to learn coding rather do it with freeware applications, Dreamweaver is not the best product for coding. I would recommend you Ultraedit 2000 (if you realy want to buy something) but it would be better to stick with freeware editors for now until you are more experienced ;) . For the Designing part go with Photoshop if you want to get good support ;).

If I'm ever going to say something of any worth on this forum it'll be this....

Put your wallet back in your pocket...

Then grab yourself a copy of Inkscape.

    http://www.inkscape.org

It's Free, It kicks butt and if you want to see what it can do go and check out
    Heathenx's Tutorial Site.

    http://screencasters.heathenx.org
Check out Episode 16 1st. Then you can go and play with all the nice stuff later.

And Inkscape runs on all platforms - Windoze, Mac and Linux.

Seriously, keep your money in your pocket till you give it a go.

    Cheers
    Tim

There are free trials for photoshop floating around everywhere. Its pretty easy to learn and is not only incredibly powerful, but there are tons on sites devoted to tutorials, add-ons, etc.

Here's the deal, in my humble opinion. Don't cheat yourself out of quality to save a few bucks when its something like that that will make you money back. Adobe (in this case for web design) you should get the Adobe CS3 Web package. Go to adobe dot com and look at the CS3 for web to tell you the difference in the standard and premium. I use in my work, Ai, PS Extended, DW, Fl, and Id. Oh, Bridge as well, but thats for organization, and now that OSX leopard has the coverflow preview, less of bridge is needed. But yeah, dont get the cheap crap Joe's Wannabe Picture Pro kinda stuff when you want to be serious in your work. There are illustrator, photoshop, and other adobe program trials off their website if money is tight right now. Good luck

Another one to consider from Adobe is Fireworks. I've always liked its controls better then Photoshop. Its also pretty solid for doing quick designs and then exporting stuff to Photoshop for fine touches.
