    SMF is a great forum system for the beginner. You can easily install mods and themes, and it's simple to administrate. If you're willing to spend more time, you can try phpBB3. It takes more steps to do things though, like create forums, because you have to assign permissions and all that.

    I LOVE smf... phpbb just looks cheap in general.

    If I had to choose i'd pick vBulletin over anything, but SMF if I didn't have that choice.

    I think that smf is easier than phpbb. I looked for SMF themes. It's gerat for beginners. It does not require any advance skills in coding. But if you willing to spend more time, you can try phpBB. It takes more steps to do things though, like create forums.
