    Definitely Dutch, it is the closest one and Germans / Dutch people can understand another (at least Dutch understand Germans very well).

    Great question. I also would like to know what the OP means by "best" in terms of translation. Does that mean "most accurate" or "fewest changes" or "easiest to do" or "most translators available" or ???

    I guess he means "most accurate", since translating into German is quite different from most other languages which differ much in origin.
    Afrikaans is also similar to German, derives from Dutch I believe.
