The Gimp is prolly the best in the free and open source department. There is also Irfan View you might want to check out. I find it useful for some odds and ends like batch renaming files.

I would say yes, but that is because I gave up on free stuff first time I tried it. Adobe programs tend to be easier to use and give you a more pro look. You could always try and master free ones though ;)

    Hey,
Adobe products RULE, i have used alot of products but totally recommend those, for graphics and logos etc, sometimes you just have to get your wallet out,

ALL adobe products give your 30 days free trial...take advantage of it!

if not try on ebay as there is lots of copies of photoshop selling all the time for a small cost of around $20-$150 which is very cheap if you look at the actual costs of the program

As a rule, logos should always be designed using vector graphics software like Illustrator and Coreldraw because only then they can be scaled properly on any medium, which could be anything like a web site, or the back of a truck, in a television commercial, a newspaper ad or even on a football pitch.
