Just in case anyone believed the official government explanation (excuses).

I guess that's what happens when you have a TRILLION DOLLAR WAR to pay for. Gotta make cuts somewhere!

Just look at latest federal budget proposal. It's basically telling our kids and grand kids to F. off!

Seems like the Democrats *suddenly* like Brown now. Weren't the levees that broke ones that were already upgraded?

Rob, what do you believe? I mean I have heard some very sickening theories around the title of your thread. Unfortunatley the link you provided doesn't work without login and pass. Some of the questions that I have are

Why was the response time so loooong after Katrina passed through?
Does this relate to low income people of color?

When the US has to invade Iraq, Bosnia or whereever, how long does that take? My guess not long at all comparatively speaking.

Right after this terrible tragedy hit and the days that followed this became highly stressful to me to see all these displaced families and people. Our government offered help right away, our offer was refused . Meanwhile the media coverage gets heavier...truly heartbreaking at the time AND quite the piss off when no help from other countries was initially accepted. The first 24-48 hours was critical. This is when most lives are saved or lost!

I could never really get beyond how this was handled from a government standpoint. To me just another miserable failure, IMO.

(No offence intended to anyone just mere observations and opinions :), from north of the border)

This actually takes quite a long time - especially when they have to move aircraft carriers etc around the world. It's a big logistics exercise. What they do is plan way in advance (just in case some, might say), then hype the issue in the press / media closer to the day of action.

I'm with you on that one. Must have really narked someone to except foreign aid

The problem is Hurricane season is just a few months away and I wonder if we're better prepared? I doubt we are!

And if we're not prepared to deal with a natural disaster, then how can we deal with an attack of any sort on a major American city?

How can we when we're sending all of our resources over to Iraq?

New Orleans is a federal city, and some people feel it was the governor of Louisiana and Ray Nagin who are responisble. While they should take a little blame, the fact that Bush cut the funding is the MAIN cause of the failure.

Bush is soooooooooo patriotic. I mean, he'd rather cut funding to fix levies in an American city so he can rebuild schools he destroyed in a foreign country, Iraq.

Yet some of you him still support him no matter how bad he screws up. What does Bush have to do for you people to realize he is the most corrupt president we've ever had?

Its so obvious now. Bush supporters can't even hold their grounds in arguments anymore. But remember, the democratic leaders are corrupt to, so if Hillary gets in in 2008, don't expect her to save us either.

    Thanks for posting that Rob.
I really don't know how you prepare for such devastation besides the obvious, batten down the hatches.
I don't buy this. With today's technology and monitoring equipment the category AND timing was known well in advance. There were still plenty of troops and national guard that could have been strategically positioned to 'sweep' through the damage zone immediately after Katrina died. That didn't happen . PLEASE SPLAIN GEORGE . He seems to always we on holidays or sleeping at the wheel when catastrophic events occur, when with he awaken? I don't blame the FEMA guy for this, he is just the fall guy that George hired.

To me, this whole disaster didn't need to take the human toll it did! The fault of that lies solely in Georges lap.

    IMO

Kinda make you wonder what Ray "Wonka" Nagan and the chocolate factory was doing with all those federal funds we have been sending them for 40 years to fix their levies... Hmmmm

I remember the Times Beach incident as a kid growing up in St. Louis... Never remember the State of MO blaming the Federal government on that. It's so easy to shift responsiblity now-a-days... Ah the left.

    This too will pass...

Nope, they both deserve all the blame (Nagan and the Governous). Bush cut what funding specifically? Funding for the levies? Did it ever occur to you why? Because the money was not being used for the levies. God only knows where it went, but certainly not to the levies. My guess is it went to other pork belly lefty programs to perpetuate the usual waste that the left subscribes to. That or into the pockets of the govenor and mayor.

But as we all know, it was the Bush/Cheney super huricane machine (created and built by Halliburton) that caused the huricane in the first place. Ah to be ignorant...

40 + years of funding and not one red cent ever found its way to the reconstruction of the levy system in LA. Man the truth really hurts..

You are really going to have to show me how he is corrupt first. Good luck.

There is no ground that needs to be held. There is no argument. I know democrats are corrupt. No argument there either. Hillary? Yikes, I would no more expect her to save us than I would the Easter Bunny to lay a hard boiled egg.

mia is one of those mouthpiece fanatics that defends the government even after they, themselves have admitted to mistakes.

It's pretty funny but sometimes I wonder if it's sane.

That toll was from Wednesday, September 21, 2005.

Surely more people have turned up dead.

The really terrible thing is most of the dead people survived the actual storm but died in the debacle that followed.

    Source.

Right you are Rob. After the initial response (lack thereof) I really became enraged about the whole ordeal and stopped following the numbers. How much of this can you stomach on CNN.

That's exactly my point above, clearly much of this could have been avoided through more agressive and timely search and rescue. Once the ball got rolling (4 days after) lives were saved but WTF happened in those 4 days where most of the loss occurred??

And hardly anybody is being held accountable. In fact, it seems like most people have fogotten about it all together.
