I was wondering if it is allowed to buy VB licenses. Can I buy a license for one of my sites? I mean from someone who doesn`t need it.

What forum software are you using right now? Have you ever received a security notification from that community? In other words, if a security hole is found, are you notified?

The Vbulletin developers take security very serious. On the official vbulletin modification site - vbulletin.org, the core vbulletin developers look at the modifications. If a modification is found to be insecure, it is removed and a notification is sent out to everyone that has it installed. Does your current forum software company do that?

I have been a member of the SMF community for over 2 years. A few months ago a serious security issue was found in older versions of SMF. I did not receive a single notification. In fact, there was only a couple of threads about it in their forum.

PHPBB - I have been a member there for about 3 years. I have yet to receive any kind of update or security bulletin from them.

If you want a forum software that will keep you updated, security holes fixed, and a professional community, go with VB.

For everything else - buggy, insecure, no support, go with anything else.

But lets not forget invision power board. It is a professional grade forum software that has a lot of good features. I have never used IPB, so I can not offer a first hand opinion on it. I do however run 3 forums, 2 - Vbulletin and 1 - SMF. As soon as I get the money, that smf is being migrated to VB.

I think you all missed "security issue" of smf and phpbb3.
every time we see Phpbb3 forums getting hacked, cause of loads of security loop holes.
vbulletin is one of the most secure board software out and second is "IPB".

What kind of answer do you want?

    I pay for VBulletin because:

    1. I want a quality product.

    2. I want real tech support. Meaning I can submit a real support ticket, and get a real answer from a real person.

    3. I want quality modifications.

    4. I want a secure product.

    5. I want built in paid subscriptions with automatic reminder emails and automatic changing of usergroups.

    6. I want built in payment processing for the paid subscriptions.

    7. I want easy to install modifications.

    8. I want timely updates from the forum software company.

    9. I want to be notified about updates and security issues.

    10. I want easy to install updates.

    11. I want customizable usergroup permissions.

    12. I want customizable forum permissions.

    13. I want the forum category to adopt the permissions of the section they are put under. So I can set the permissions once, then add forum sections and not have to set the permissions on every section I add. This is something SMF does not do.

    14. I want full integration with add-ons, not bridges.

    15. I want a centralized location were I can keep track of my installed add-ons. VBulletin.org does this. Every add-on you install is kept track of. So updating gets a lot easier.

    16. I want easy to install avatars.

    17. I want to customize my users permissions based on user groups. This making selling premium memberships easier.

    18. I want my users to have customized profiles.

    19. I want a downloads section where members can add or download files.

    20. I want is easy for users to post videos.

    21. I want lightbox effect for pictures.

    22. I want a fully integrated picture gallery. Vbulletin 3.7 and up has a built in picture gallery.

When I built my forum I had an idea of what I wanted to do. Phpbb, smf, postnuke forum, mybb, mdpro forum - none of them were able to even come close. After a year of trying to build the forum I wanted, I decided to give up on free forums and buy VB.

Why did I buy Vbulletin? Because it was the only product that could do what I wanted.

You changed your question in the middle of the thread. Your first post asked about buying VB.

But you changed your question to buying a second hand version of VB.

    =======================

If it were up to me, buy a new license.

There is a less chance of getting ripped off if you buy straight from the source. Buy a 2nd hand license only if it comes from a good source.

you can buy the license from your friend but it has to be an owned license. Also, jelsoft will side with the original buyer if there is a dispute between who owns the license.

So you might buy the license from your friend but he might then tell jelsoft that you stole his account and jelsoft will take his word over yours which may result in you loosing your money.

    Therefore. Buy a new license.

Thank you for your answers people. Considering what you told me I also believe the best way is to buy a new license.
