I think that newbies will sign up just so that they can get some education. Maybe they don't feel that they can really contribute to the conversation without getting ripped on. I think it's just a matter of being comfortable.

From years of experience as a forum owner and a forum joiner, I do NOT like confirming my email, captcha, user moderation, post or thread moderationetc. If I find a forum that I wish to join, I want it to be a quick process. With that being said, it's a catch 20 situation because spammers love forums that do not require such.

Many members may join and find it's not what they are looking for and simply do not come back.

Some people join with only one objective and that is to be nosy. Many others join to simply steal threads and take them to other forums. So, there are many reasons. In the past, I have set up permissions on the forum, "if a member doesn't post within a certain amount of days, disable their membership" But that is really useless as they have gotten what they wanted.

I've tried to make it as easy as possible for my members to register and post. I try to keep the content updated so that it is interesting and such.

    Good luck.

For me, I am also looking for a forum to get some knowledge of what others knew. Like for example I want to know what product to make my skin white. I will look for a forum that suggest what products should I used without registering the forum.

Some might register to see a link if they are blocked to guests. A lot will be automated bots.

That´s true. I think a lot of times we join a forum because it seems interesting, but if we don´t like, we never post.

I joined the forum just to LURK ALL DAY. No really. There are endless amounts of useful information here, I rarely have the need to ask a question or contribute.

Well I think it depends on what you are looking for in a forum. If you are only around here to gain some ideas and maybe to buy stuff you won't need to post much. If you are planning to use the forum to exchange with other users you of course will have to ... Time available is also an factor at least for myself and I would consider me someone who is still posting regular on DP.

Some do it just to establish a presence, or they may intend to post in the future.

Well, there are lots of reasons why member do/did not posts any.. Here are some:

Some of the members are profile link builder.. Others will only register to read the post.. Some members after reading the forum or registering, they found out that the forum is not good at all. Others find that the thread is boring or the forum site itself is not attractive or interesting!

It takes a lot of dedication to remain active on a forum. I have joined hundreds of forums but I am only currently active on 1 right now (DP). This is because as time goes on, my interests change. It's also because I may have joined a forum to gain access to info, or to ask a question. Once I have used a website for what it's worth then I never come back unless there is a reason. Unless your members create a deep connection to your forum, why would they stick around?
