So I visit quite a few forums everyday... DP, Sitepoint, Webmaster World... and today I go to log into webmaster world and get this:

"status: Either we require login from users from your ISP because of abuse, or the thread is marked members only. Please login and then back up to view."

My whole ISP has been banned, and for what I have no idea. Three years on that forum and I get banned for someone elses crap. I emailed them and they want me to pay to continue using the forum... screw that. I could always use a proxy, but that's not the point.

I know I never have to worry about crap like that here, because this forum isn't money hungry. Thank God for DP.

You are right, its much more chilled out as well. Not only that you dont have to pay to use trade sections.

Yep, Sitepoint is alright but not as active as DP

WMW does have some nice members but it just sucks. I recon because it got way too big.

WMW freaks out when you include a link in your post, doesn't allow signitures, is messed up....

SitePoint has a lot of ads, ie pop-ups, doesn't welcome messed up wackos, Off Topic boards don't count in the PC....

SEOChat has a lot of ads, is slow, likes Kong Fu, floods posts with rep comments...

    DP Rocks!!!

Sitepoint was OK, and has a some very intelligent and successful members/people but it was slowly getting on my nerves. When they got rid of signatures publicly I was out of there. Maybe it's because they are so big.

    Hope DP doesn't change.

Are you sure you weren't trying to access a thread in the 'Supporters Forum'?

I can't see them asking you to pay to use the regular (public) forums.

In my opinion they let you browse a few pages before asking you cough up. If I ever want to read something on there (which I hardly ever do) I use google as a referrer and the page usually shows up.

    Whoa whoa whoa!

    When did this start happening?

    I do not believe that!

WMW has a separate forum, "The Supporters Forum", which requires you to "cough up". But the regular forums are free.

What do you think is a regular forum? I went WMW to see if you are correct, went to html and browsers in there I clicked on Doctype help! (normal post) and I get "status: Either we require login ..."

And yup, I did what I usually do, went over to google and typed the url in and surprise surprise the page shows up!

Rob, if you don't believe that then don't but I am telling you this has always been the case for me. Tell you the truth I couldn't give two sh*ts about WMW. DigitalPoint and Shawn Hogan, ROCK ON!!

I used to think this too... Actually Webmaster world does it self a HUGE dis-service in the way it is set-up in order to attract new members. When I first started doing searches for information I would very often hit on WMW and see a registration page with nice credit card logos and run away. It happened time and time again. Wasn't until I was firmly entrenched at Digital Point that I realized you just had to sign up as a free member to see those threads.

Either it is intentional and it is hurting the amount of new people they attract there, or it is a deliberate attempt to increase the number of paid-memberships.

Either way I don't think it is a good set-up.
