Windows 7 vs. Windows XP

False. If your PC could handle Vista, then it ran fine.

If you know what you are doing, it runs perfectly.

A lot of idiots used to have 512 mb of RAM on their XP. When they upgraded to Vista, they forgot to upgrade their RAM. Therefore, they experienced LOTS of lag. That's where most of the complaints came from.

 

^ Trust me, I'm a QA analyst and saw the horrors that is Vista compaired to XP/7

 

I bought a new top of the line laptop with Vista Ultimate last year and Vista runs ok but its disappointing that with all the hardware I have it's not faster. Multiple test show XP is still faster than Vista or Win 7. It has a smaller kernel.

My biggest problem with Vista and probably will be with 7 is that driver incompatibilities. It takes hours of time to figure out what's causing all the conflicts etc.

Any one have any good solutions to this one? I'm considering either going back to xp or up to 7. It sounds ridiculous but I'm considering these options. I think win 7 has a nice interface and is more stable than Vista but its definitely not faster than XP and will have more driver conflicts.

 

Hardware config: T9400 Core 2 Duo, 4GB Ram, 500GB 7.2K HD, 512mb Nvidia GPU

 

Why would I tweak XP to look like vista or 7, I would go directly for 7. Its faster, I heard they solved a bunch of old known problems like fragmentations and overall speed. It uses graphic resources better .
And yes I was afraid in the beginning if I would be able to install all the drivers, but Ive managed to do that at the end. The database of supported drivers is being updated on a daily bases...

 

There are quite a few tests that show XP is faster in several areas than Win 7. The overall consensus seems both XP and Win 7 are faster than Vista.
PC mag did the comparison below on Nov 10, 2009 and XP beat Win 7 in a few categories.

I have Windows XP installed now, can I just buy the upgrade, or would it be recommended to buy the whole new Windows 7?

 

yeah for me too, XP still provides me with all I need, but i think 7 is more exciting

 

Windows 7 is better than windows XP.
It's faster,also the graphics are comparatively good.
It's also better than vista.

 

My vote is with windows 7 it's more fast and fore reliable.

 

I also again prefer Windows XP has no more competitors available in current market! however many other OS available however the class & performance of XP is ground breaking

 

I really like Windows 7 and I'm recommending it to everyone now. Switched from XP about a month ago.

Comparison:

1. Cost - 7 is definitely more expensive, as you pay ~$170 for the upgrade version. The good thing is it's a one time fee and you're probably gonna use 7 for the next 7 years

2. Resources needed - CPU - no difference; GPU - Aero takes a bit more, so if you have a really old video card, don't upgrade; RAM - +300 needed for 7, good thing is you can use more than 4GB with the 64bit version.

3. Speed - Exactly as XP and a little faster in frequently used apps thanks to Superfetch;

4. Reliability - I've had no issues, and I'm using it to play games, use the Internet and edit/convert videos sometimes.

Why I upgraded:
- Got really tired of XP's interface after using it for about 5 years and seeing Compiz on Linux (too bad the apps I need don't run on it);
- I have 4GB of RAM and a 64-bit CPU which were underused;
- I needed DirectX 10 and Vista (that came with my new computer) was just too slow.

 

There are significant problems upgrading from XP to Win7 and most articles say you should buy the full version ($300?).

Windows 8 will be out in about 2 years.

If you don't play games, or have a XBox, any OS will do so you might as well get something better than Windows. Get a Mac or use LInux.

That's why I don't run Windows. The better apps I use on Linux don't run on it.

Windows7 definitely!

 

I have heard very good things about Windows 7, and since it is newer it is expected that it would be much better.

 

Nothing is in any way faster on a Core 2 Duo with 4 GB RAM than a tweaked XP Pro x64. And this is a personal experience based on testing Vista and Seven.

Im running my upgrade on my 6 month old laptop now... hoping it will get me a decent gain on everything...

 

Im using Windows 7 right now. I have to say that the performance is similar to Windows XP but some problems still come from unfixed bugs from Vista and some important drivers are not compatible with windows 7..
