What does "good standard of living mean?"

Even if the standard of living goes down, it wont be the people on this forum who suffer, people are way too creative here, it will be the average unqualified employee.
You have to make best use of the resources available, if you do that you can easily have a good life. If not, we'll just have to work till were 80 (which i think is fair, why should we bum around for 30 years (between 60-90) when 50 years ago people only bummed around for 10...

Well hell. I'm not going to even try anymore. I thought I was doing well until I was told that I would never succeed anyways. Damn myself for even giving it a go.

Where's the nearest government teet I can suck from?

Every generation faces economic challenges. I think the generation being mentioned here (and I'm a part of it) has it easier than any generation that came before us.

Tell someone who lived through the depression in the USA how hard we have it today if you want to make them chuckle:)

My father had to pass through years where the inflation rate here was at almost 200% per year. He almost lost his house due to mortgage bills increasing to the sky.

I agree with GFC, things look much better now.

I think part of the problem with books like that one is they ignore all the general progress in technology and everything else that have made everyone's lives so much better. There are all kinds of improvements we have that people growing up 30-40 years ago didn't have. No one in the age bracket that book talks about is getting drafted - my parents and grandparents had to deal with that, spend time abroad fighting instead of being at home doing what they want.

All of our electronic goods, computers, etc. didn't exist then and are becoming cheaper and cheaper every year. There aren't gas lines, there isn't 12% unemployment, there isn't 12% inflation at the same time eroding the value of our money. We don't have polio or all kinds of other diseases that have been cured, and things like the flu or pneumonia that used to kill people off in our parents generation will just put us in bed for a week. We've got new diseases like AIDS, but we've also got vastly better health care than our parents or grandparents had. Environmental pollution is much lower (trust me, the 60's-70's were much worse than anything we deal with now).

A lot of this is really about perspective - there've always been problems, and it always seems like the ones we have now are much worse than before because they're immediate and in our face. But if you think about it, it's an easy choice as to who's got it better off. Most of the job-related problems that book talks about are a result of the workforce getting more educated. All of the people in my age group who got good jobs had to go past college to get a grad degree - it's basically a given when it used to be icing on the cake. That hurts the people who don't - and if you stop at college, it makes it much more painful to pay off your student loans because you aren't making as much. But the same thing used to be true about a high school diploma as well. We're moving into a new society with different problems, but I would rather have those problems than the ones we used to have.

    for fryman - paragraphed :)

Without tens of thousands of dollars in college debts or 5+ years experience (or both) everyone is unqualified for any job paying a decent amount.

So I'm unqualified for the job I am in? Odd. I feel like I know what I'm doing.

I dropped out of University after 2 years...

To be honest, it was the best thing I have done in my life. I sure don't recommend you people to do it, but it sure changed my life. I would of ended up at a lousy job earning $2k a month if I were lucky and working 9 hours per day. Now I work one hour doing something I love and earn way more than that.

Education isn't everything in life... if you are consistent and work hard then the sky's the limit

Thats my point exactly. $90 to you isn't a lot of money for one person? It used to be but its not anymore because of inflation and the falling value of our "fiat" currency. I'm just certain the US is headed toward a recession, and I'm about to began ordering silver tommorow.

I'm afraid. I have a hard time sleeping at night and anyone who is "in the know" is scared to. I read about something the other day that really sucked. If you're not worried its because you are in the dark.

This family in Argentina had 42 grand sitting in the bank. Suddenly, the economy hit a major recession(because of the IMF and World Bank) and the value of the peso fell hard. The government suddenly froze the bank accounts, and transferred the families money from US dollars into pesos.

The families account went from 42 grand to 11 grand. They soon ran out of money and ended up in poverty, along with most of the country.

You thought Sept 11 was something. Wait until the "economic 911" hits. Its going to make September 11, 2001 and the stock market crash of 1929 look like a field day in comparison.

I wouldn't think the way I do if I didn't see my bills constantly getting bigger, the rich getting richer, and the poor getting poorer. Every time I turn on the tv a payday or title loan commercial is on.

Then you see the cost of education going up and jobs going overseas. Come on fryman, you and everyone else know our government isn't looking out for our best interests.

When I was trying to find a company to buy gold from hardly anyone can give me answers. Everyone wants to give me a credit card but no one talks about gold and silver. Its easy to see why.

I did the same, but after 4 years and no degree. I worked 2-3 jobs on occasion, doing what I wanted to do. I learned everything I needed to know while working.

I learned how to type in high school
I learned how to type fast doing data entry for a law firm
I learned accounts payable from a disgruntled person in the same law firm
took over his job a few months later
learned accounts receivable from another person, same law firm
took over both jobs a few months later
moved to a hotel and did payables/receivables and payroll later
(screwed around for a while, cuz accounting sucks BIG TIME)
    started a business

what did I learn in college? That professors dont know how to shave their nappy beards.

Just beware that making money online is hard and paychecks tend to be infrequent when ou start since there is alot of unpredictability.

My advice is to try to build assets online that eventually become automated

Im not a big fan of web design casue sure you can work at home but you are constantly building sites, trying to find clients. No different than a 9-5 really.

It is better to build automated online income sources. It takes time though but it is worth it.

    So true.

All education proves (at least to most potential employers) is that you have the ability to put up with years and years of pointless, mind numbing bull shit. They love that in a person, because odds are that's exactly what most of the job they are hiring you for consists of.

Some of the most successful people I know never even graduated from high school.

If you are doing this for a a living you would be really dumb if you only had one source of income. I honestly don't even know how many sites I have, must be like 60 now and many different ways of earning money with them.

I agree. Right now I'm combining freelance work along with trying to make automated income.

It isn't really like a 9 to 5 in the sense that you're working for yourself instead of someone, and you can pretty much pick your own hours.

The one thing I can be proud of is the fact that I don't owe any bank or credit card companies anything. I've got rid of all my debt.

I have 7 sites right now and I want to build more, but my greedy bastard hosting company has started charging two dollars a month for each domain I register plus a five dollar fee! Damn bastards!

Homestead sucks! I should have never signed up with their services! I bought a website from someone with a homestead account and they won't even transfer my site over to me!

And it only gets worse... or better, depends on how you look at it.

Started out at the typical $2 a month hosting plan... moved up and up to more expensive ones... moved up to a vps... now I am at a $280 a month dedicated server...

I am going to pass that on to my father and see how far I can get before he slaps me upside the head.

I am not saying that I disagree with you though.
